MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — On Tuesday, the Mobile County Commission approved two change orders for the Cypress Creek Golf Course project.
The project is the golf course and recreational space that Mobile County is working on at the site of the old Linksman Golf Course.
The Mobile County Commission has approved an increase in the contract amount for the contractor handling the golf course phase by $158, 187.15, bringing the total contract amount to $14.1 million. The contract time was also increased by 33 days, according to the agenda item. A Mobile County spokesperson tells us the changes include additional drainage work and work associated with relocating power lines underground.
NBC 15 News spoke with Commissioner Randall Dueitt about the golf course phase of the project back in February before the bid was awarded and when the construction of the course was expected to cost about $13.7 million.
“When we first bid on this project it was around $17 million, so that’s a substantial price cut from the first bid that we had,” said Dueitt in February.
The Mobile County Commission approved another change order this week for the facilities phase. The contract was increased by $561,372.75, bringing the new contract to nearly $7.9 million dollars. The Mobile County spokesperson tells us the changes to this contract include geosynthetic stabilization under a driveway, extra earthwork and soil quantities at the project site, some adjustments to a bathroom and pavilion, and more construction days for surcharge and permitting delays. The contract time was increased by 103 according to the agenda item.
In February, construction crews were making progress on the course as structures were being built for the boardwalk, park, and other amenities. Dueitt told NBC 15 news he believes the golf course will bring a lot of value to citizens and the community.
“The whole purpose of this golf course really was to provide another element for the quality of life to the people of Mobile. A major part of this project is so that our kids will have somewhere to play golf,” he said in February.
According to the county’s Environmental Services Department, the golf course is currently at about $23 million for design planning and construction.
