MMA Prelim Pick of the Week: UFC 311

UFC Flyweight Fight: Clayton Carpenter vs Tagir Ulanbekov

Start Time: Saturday 6:00pm EST (ESPN+)

We have a pair of fighters coming into the prelims on Saturday – both fresh off of back-to-back submission victories. While Carpenter has shown a bit more consistent wrestling, Ulanbekov has been a touch better on the feet. However, there is one aspect of this fight that I think favors the underdog.

That facet is the scrambling. If you see the issues that Ulanbekov had in his last loss (a decision to Tim Elliott), he struggled with those scrambling moments. Whether that was in the clinch or on the ground, Elliott kept getting the best of him. It’s that fact that makes me like Carpenter here. He is a talented wrestler, but his ability to scramble to better positions is the best part of that realm.

If he can get Ulanbekov fighting that kind of game early, he should be able to come out with a victory and a nice dog cash.
