In the top of the first, the Reds will head to bat against Charlie Morton. The 40-year old righty has had an up and down year, but has been much better as of late. His 4.24 ERA is nothing too alarming, but his last five games have proven much better. He’s allowed just 10 runs over those last five games, which comes out to a 3.25 ERA in that span. With the Reds coming in smack dab in the middle in terms of runs and first inning runs, you can trust that Morton will get three early outs.
Not only has Atlanta been a touch worse in run scoring than the Reds, but they also have been bad at the plate lately. They’ve scored just 13 runs in their last four games (3.25 runs per game), and are banged up in the worst way. Facing Nick Martinez likely won’t help those matters. He’s allowed just one earned run in two of his last three games. That includes allowing just one to the Astros last time out in a start that spanned 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. With the way Atlanta is hitting right now, he should bring the NRFI home.

In the top of the first we’ll see David Festa take the bump. While the surface stats don’t look great for him, he’s been on a roll ever since the calendar turned to August. TIn that month, he posted a 3.13 ERA and tallied 30 strikeouts in 23.0 innings. He’s kept that going with his first September start. He held the Rays to just two runs while striking out seven. With the Angels ranking 27th in the majors in runs, he should put up another solid outing on Monday.
Reid Detmers has a little bit more to worry about (as do we) when he takes to the hill. While he did have a great outing last time, holding the Dodgers to just two runs and striking out ten, he has been shaky recently. Still, I’ll entrust him with our NRFI because of how bad the Twins have been as of late. They scored just ten runs in their last five games combined. It’s been even worse over their last three, where they have posted just two total runs. With that trend and Detmers showing some improvements, we’ll take a stab on this one.
