Mirra Andreeva recorded one of the biggest wins of her young career at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
The World number 14 is into the semi-finals of the WTA Tour 1000 event after securing a comprehensive victory over Iga Swiatek.
Andreeva faced the Pole for the second time on Thursday, six months after their three-set encounter at the Cincinnati Masters, which the teenager lost.
But she was able to turn the tables on the five-time Grand Slam champion in the Middle East, and made history in the process.
Mirra Andreeva took just one hour and 36 minutes to defeat Swiatek at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
She looked extremely confident from the back of the court and certainly showed no fear against the World number one.
She won 72% of points behind her first serve and 60% off her second serves, while also saving seven of the eight break points she faced.
After taking the first set Andreeva was trailing 1-3, she reeled off the last five games of the match to seal a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win.
Andreeva has advanced to her first WTA 1000 semi-final and in the process became the youngest player to reach the last four in Dubai since the tournament’s inception in 2001.
Andreeva will contest her first WTA 1000 semi-final against either Elena Rybakina or Sofia Kenin.
The 2022 Wimbledon champion came from a set down and also match points to defeat Paula Badosa to reach the Dubai quarter-finals.
Kenin on the other hand, defeated defending champion Jasmine Paolini for the loss of just four games to make it to the last four.
Andreeva has played Rybakina on just one previous occasion. The Kazak player won a three set battle in Beijing back in 2023. Kenin on the other hand, has yet to play Andreeva.
