Mike Vrabel is adding another veteran coach to his offensive staff.
According to a source, the Patriots are hiring former NFL head coach, offensive coordinator, and veteran offensive line coach Doug Marrone. The 60-year-old coach is best known for being a head coach with the Buffalo Bills (2013-2014) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2016-2020).
Marrone spent last season at Boston College working as a Senior Analyst for Football Strategy for Bill O’Brien.
A former offensive tackle, Marrone is also an experienced offensive line coach. He last worked in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints coaching their offensive linemen from 2022-2023. The year before, in 2021, he worked for Nick Saban as the offensive line coach at Alabama.
Marrone played in the NFL from 1986-1991. After retiring, he coached in the college ranks at Cortland State, Coast Guard, Northeastern, Georgia Tech, Georgia, and Tennessee. He entered the NFL ranks as the offensive line coach of the New York Jets and held that title from 2002-2005.
In 2006, Marrone was hired as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints. He held that title for three years before becoming the head coach at Syracuse University. After amassing a 25-25 record, Marrone was hired as the head coach of the Bills in 2013.
Marrone’s time in Buffalo wasn’t without controversy. After going 6-10 in 2013, Marrone resigned after going 9-7 in 2014 when he exercised an out clause triggered by the sale of the team.
Marrone was then hired by the Jaguars as an assistant head coach and offensive line coach. In 2017, he became their head coach. That year, Jacksonville went 10-6, losing to the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. Marrone went 23-43 during his time with the Jaguars and was fired after the 2020 season.
Now, he’ll add even more experience to an impressive first coaching staff for Mike Vrabel in New England.
If Marrone becomes the Patriots offensive line coach, he’ll replace Scott Peters, who took a job with the Cincinnati Bengals. Marrone joins veteran offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels along with veteran running backs coach Tony Dews, quarterbacks coach Ashton Grant, and offensive assistant Riley Larkin
