Middle Eastern golfers are set to take centre stage this week as the DP World Tour’s Desert Swing concludes with the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
The tournament , now in its 28th edition, brings the 2025 Race to Dubai to Doha after earlier stops in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, and Bahrain.
The Qatar Masters, a fixture on the DP World Tour since 1998, boasts a $2.5 million prize fund, alongside 3,500 Race to Dubai points and 1,000 Ryder Cup points. This year’s field features top talent from the DP World Tour, including five-time UAE champion Adrian Otaegui, as well as several invited players from the Middle East eager to make their mark.
Among the regional representatives, the UAE’s Joshua Grenville-Wood returns for his third appearance at the tournament, aiming to replicate his impressive sixth-place finish in 2023. Saudi Arabia’s Shergo Al Kurdi has secured a professional invitation, while Qatari amateurs Saleh Al Kaabi and Daniil Sokolov will compete on home soil.
Also joining the amateur ranks is Dominic McGlinchey, whose connection to Qatar stems from his father’s tenure as General Manager of Doha Golf Club, and Moroccan standout Adam Bresnu, fresh off making history as the first Arab-born player to make the cut at a Rolex Series event.
Players will face a transformed Doha Golf Club this year, following a series of course enhancements. Adjustments include reshaped fairways and green surrounds on the front nine to create more challenging run-off areas.
Specific changes include repositioned bunkers, tree removals near key greens, and newly planted palm trees on select holes. Additionally, championship tees and narrower fairways on several holes emphasise precision off the tee.
The greens, updated to paspalum ‘Dynasty’ grass in 2021, complement the Bermuda fairways and rough.
Although defending champion Rikuya Hoshino will not compete, the tournament features a strong field, including eight past winners of the iconic Mother of Pearl Trophy.
Six of this season’s eight Race to Dubai winners will be competing, including Bahrain Championship victor Laurie Canter. Only Hero Dubai Desert Classic winner Tyrrell Hatton and Alfred Dunhill Championship winner Shaun Norris will be missing.
