The winter portal window has concluded, and now signing day, and the Spartans have added 16 new transfers to the roster to go along with a freshman class of 18. While the spring portal window still looms, Michigan State fans will have a good idea of what the depth chart will look like, especially heading into spring ball.
In this series, we will be breaking down the projected depth chart for the Spartans position by position. After breaking down the offensive side of the ball: quarterback, running back, wide receiver, tight end and offensive line depth charts, we now turn to what the defensive rooms will look like. After breaking down the defensive line, linebackers and cornerbacks, the safety group is the last group to check out.
Unlike the cornerback room, that is going to undergo a wide open competition for playing time, the safety room is pretty cut and dry with who will be starting and the primary backups. If injuries get out of control, like they did last year, this group will get real interesting. But for now, things are clear and concise going into the spring.
Spencer and Martinez were both very effective in roles last year, and will have the clear path to starting at safety. If Spencer bumps down to the nickel slot, like he has before, I would not be surprised if Tatum or Denson took over that safety role.
This is also another position that the Spartans could look for some added depth in the portal following the spring.
