If the NCAA men’s basketball Tournament started on Saturday, Michigan would be in with a favorable seed to reach the Sweet 16.
Michigan was assigned a 4 seed in the selection committee’s early bracket reveal, released Saturday afternoon. The actual bracket will be unveiled on March 16.
Michigan is 19-5 overall and ranked No. 18 in the NCAA’s NET entering Sunday’s game at Ohio State (1:03 p.m. ET, CBS). The Wolverines are 6-3 in Quad 1 (the most difficult) games, 5-2 in Quad 2, 6-0 in Quad 3, and 2-0 in Quad 4.
Currently, they’re viewed as the 14th overall seed. The committee put them in the West Region, where Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games will be played in San Francisco. Florida is the 1 seed there, Houston the 2, and Kentucky the 3.
The selection committee chairman, North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham, said that Michigan and St. John’s (the 4 seed in the East) were swapped to balance those regions in regards to the overall seed list.
Michigan still has seven regular-season games left before the Big Ten Tournament, with six of those currently slotted to be Quad 1 games.
Michigan missed the NCAA Tournament the past two seasons.
