If Aaron Glenn wants the New York Jets head coaching job, it’s his. And according to Michael Kay, he wants Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback.
Wait… New York Yankees announcer Michael Kay?
With rumors swirling about Glenn landing in New York being a mere formality, there’s growing buzz about his potential plans for the quarterback position. And on his radio show, Kay did his best Adam Schefter impersonation to say that Glenn may just want Aaron Rodgers to return in 2025.
“For the Jets, the one thing you don’t have to worry about is the head coach’s salary,” said Kay. “That doesn’t go past anybody’s salary cap or anything like that. And there is word out there, there’s been leaks I’ve heard that whatever they pay Aaron Glenn, he’s made it known that he would like to keep Aaron Rodgers.
“And I really do believe that’s the way to go. I said this on Friday, and this is coming from a guy, I’m not enamored with Aaron Rodgers both on the field and off the field. But I need to have a better answer if you’re going to tell Aaron Rodgers, ‘OK, we’re good.’ I need to have a better answer. I need to know exactly where’s the pivot. Where are you going if you don’t bring back Aaron Rodgers? Because if you don’t bring back Aaron Rodgers, it’s a big cap hit anyway — dead cap money. If you bring him back, there’s still a cap hit, but you know what? At least you have a quarterback.”

For what it’s worth, this is the same Kay who previously celebrated Rodgers failing with the Jets, saying that not only did it “make me feel warm and fuzzy,” but he also labeled the 41-year-old quarterback as a “kind of jackass.”
But Kay did concede a valid point about Rodgers’ 2024 season.
“He was not coached this year after Game 5,” Kay continued. “And with all due respect to Robert Saleh, who’s getting some traction in his head coaching interviews, I don’t think he was getting coached in his first five games anyway. You know what was really apparent that he wasn’t coached at all? When he was allowed to miss the mandatory minicamp… That was a small fact into the window that he ran the organization. I don’t care how many camps that he went to that was not mandatory — three days — he would not go to; and it was allowed to happen.
“Ergo, not coached; not disciplined. Just not. You would think that a new coach comes in, he’s going to hire, at least, a smart offensive mind, that he’s going to be coached. And maybe when Aaron Glenn comes in, sits him down and says, ‘We’re gonna do it my way. You’re not running the show.’ Maybe Aaron Rodgers says, ‘You know what? I want out.’ Maybe Aaron Rodgers wants to pull all the levers; who knows?
“But, if Aaron Glenn gets the job, then one Aaron should sign off on the other Aaron. You’ve heard of the Yankees’ Aaron’s — Aaron Boone, Aaron Judge. Well, this’ll be the Jets’ Aaron’s — Aaron Glenn and Aaron Rodgers. That’s the way to move forward. It’s the only way.”
All signs point to Rodgers wanting to continue playing even if he recently admitted he needed a “mental break” before deciding on his future for the 2025 NFL season. While Rex Ryan confidently predicted Rodgers would not return to One Jets Drive, the outspoken ESPN NFL analyst is not a legitimate candidate for the job.
You wouldn’t quite expect a Yankees announcer to break significant NFL news. But while Kay probably won’t be the one to first report Glenn’s official hiring, it’s clear that he’s plugged into what’s happening in their coaching search and subsequent conversations about the future of the franchise.
So, while Kay isn’t putting the cart before the horse, he’s made it clear that if Glenn does indeed take the reins, keeping Rodgers might be the first big decision to solidify the Jets’ future.
