PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) -Michael Bruce will play one final high school match on Monday at the New England Championships in Connecticut. Rene Cloukey takes a look at Bruce’s success in High School. Michael Bruce has had so much success on the golf courses during his High School career. He capped it off with a Class C State Championship in extremely windy conditions at Natanis in Vassalboro.
”It was insanely windy we checked the morning of states and it was 23 miles an hour with up to 40 mile an hour gusts,” said Michael Bruce, “It was about as bad as I ever played in.”
Last year at the State Championship, Bruce had a huge lead heading into the 18th and final hole, but golf has a way of humbling you. Bruce took an 11 on the final hole and what could have been an easy victory turned into a bitter defeat.
“It feels great especially after what happened last year. I think it just adds to the happiness,” said Bruce.
He said he tried to keep his mind clear as he teed off on the 18th hole this year.
“Really scary, but I just had to trust myself. I didn’t want to over think anything so I just went out there hit my shot and it worked out great,” said Bruce.
Bruce will now compete on the Maine team on Monday at Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Connecticut.
“I think it is going to be really exciting and I just want to play good golf,” said Bruce.
Bruce now adds another piece of hardware to his collection. This was a comment he gave to me back in 2016 about all the medals he has received.
“Here is my first one from the U.S. Kids golf tour and my second one is the same thing,” said Bruce, “I have my drive chip and putt ones. This is my first in chipping, my first in putting and my first overall. I was really surprised about my putting because usually I am not that good with my putting.”
Bruce’s golf career is far from over and expect him to win many more championships down the road.
