HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – Longwood men’s golf came out swinging and put together two solid rounds to open the 2024-25 season on Monday at the Par 71 Guyan Golf & Country Club.
Scott Jordan led the way with back-to-back rounds below par to be fifth after the first day at the Joe Feagenes Invitational, hosted by Marshall University.
NOTABLE RESULTS:
Longwood is in sole possession of third at 11 under par, three strokes behind Morehead State in second and 11 shots back of the host, Marshall.
Jordan is in sole possession of fifth behind a steady day of golf over 36 holes. He opened with a two-under 69 in the first round, and he had four birdies in the process.
He got off to a slow start in round two, but he closed extremely well. He finished the round with four birdies and an eagle, and he carded a three-under 68.
Nick Fleming pieced together a strong round in his Longwood debut. The transfer tied for seventh with back-to-back rounds below par. He posted a 69 in round one and followed it with a 70 in the follow-up effort.
Hunter Swidzinski made his collegiate debut, and he posted a pair of rounds at par or better. The freshman racked up six birdies in his opening round for a two-under 69, and he followed it up with an even par 71. The end result has him tied for 13th with one round to play.
Justin LaRue finished the day tied for 20th at one-under. The reigning Big South Men’s Golfer of the Year was even in the first round before carding a one-under 70 in round two.
David LaFreniere and Zane Moore both tied for 43rd, with Moore competing as an individual. All Lancers that competed in the tournament finished in the top half of the 86-player field.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“I thought we did a lot of good work today,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. “Even when things weren’t necessarily going our way, we were, for the most part, able to stay focused on the task in front of us and play hard all day. That’s one of the key things we talked about—whether it’s going well or not, just keep playing hard. The thing too is that we all know we can play, and especially score, even better.”
“Obviously, Scott was pretty good all day and was able to put two solid numbers on the board,” Fillman added. “I’m really happy both Nick and Hunter were able to make big-time contributions in their debuts for us. I’m not surprised that Hunter handles his first-even college rounds the way he did. He’s had a heck of a summer, so he was more than ready for this.”
“While Justin wasn’t the Justin we know and have, in all honesty, probably become overly reliant upon the past couple years, I think it’s fantastic for both him and our golf team to know that he doesn’t have to be a hero everyday for us to have success,” Fillman added about his team’s total strength. “We’re definitely going to have success with our depth, both from players who are playing this week and those who are back on campus. I would expect Justin to play much more the way he expects to play tomorrow. As a group, we just have to continue to be confident, go play aggressively, and see if we can put any pressure on the leaders. We will see what happens.”
