WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – The Denison University men’s golf team carded a team low round score of 294 to solidify its third-place finish at the NCAA Region V Preview event. The 36-hole event was hosted at Manikiki Golf Course in Willoughby, Ohio.
Denison’s top team recorded a team total of 598 (304-294) to finish in third place. The Big Red were narrowly edged for second place by John Carroll, who were just one stroke ahead at 597. Trine University took the team title with a total of 587 in the 22-team field.
The Big Red placed three golfers inside the Top 10. Leading the way was Nicholas Viana, who finished fourth after carding a two-day total of 146. Viana carded a 72 on Saturday before registering a 74 in Sunday’s final round. Viana totaled eight birdies during the event.
Owen Blakely tied for sixth place at four-over. Blakely shot a one-under 71 on Sunday after logging a 77 during the opening round.
Andrew Gallagher tied for ninth place overall. Gallagher was two-under during his round Sunday after carding a 79 on Saturday.
Drew Brasky tied for 69th place. He combined for a score of 161 (76-85). Benjamin Grelle also competed for the top team and logged a 165 (86-79).
Denison’s other competing team finished in 11th in the team standings. Leading that team was John Yavari, who tied for 23rd individually. Yavari totaled a 36-hole score of 154 (78-76).
Jack Yurosek tied for 31st place with a total score of 155 (79-76). Joseph Brasky tied for 41st place one stroke behind at 156 (80-76).
Neil Joon finished with a 166 (89-77) after seeing a 12-stroke improvement during Sunday’s round. Marcus Ying carded a 168 (80-88) to round out the competitors for Denison’s second team.
The Big Red continues its fall season this upcoming weekend at the Dan Quayle Match Play. The event is at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.
