SAVANNAH, Ga. – Justin LaRue led the charge, and Longwood men’s golf followed his lead to lead the Savannah Intercollegiate.
LaRue was eight under through two rounds, and the Lancers were 18-under as a team. Hunter Swidzinski also sits in the top five at six-under, and Scott Jordan was five under to finish in the top eight.
NOTABLES:
The Lancers had three guys under par, and the team leads by three strokes in the 14-team field at the Par 72, 7,131 yard course at The Club at Savannah Harbor.
The team’s 282-276—558 (-18) set a record through 36 holes relative to par, and it was one shot off the team’s raw score record of 557, when the team was 11-under after the second round of the 2024 Big South Championship and matched at the Joe Feaganes Invitational this past fall with a 278-279—557.
The Lancers led the field on Par 4s and tied for first in the Par 5s, and the team had three eagles in 36 holes. The team did so amid tough, wet conditions. Rain fell off and on throughout the day.
The Lancers lead by three shots over USC Beaufort in second.
LaRue put together a strong first round and ripped off a first-round, posting a 67 with four birdies and an eagle. He followed it up with a second-round 69, firing another four birdies and an eagle.
The Lancer senior was at his best on Par 5s, where he was six under on the day which tied for the lead in the 84-player field.
Swidzinksi ripped off a five-under in the second round, good for the second best second round. The freshman had six birdies to only one bogey with a consistent round. His big round came through after a solid 71 in the opening round where he had four birdies.
Jordan gave Longwood their third player in the top 10 by tying for eighth. He put together back-to-back consistent rounds, posting a two-under 70 in the first before playing one stroke better with an three-under 69 in round two. On the day, he had seven birdies and an eagle.
David LaFreniere bounced back with a one-under 71 after an opening round 74 to tie for 31st, and Nick Fleming tied for 35th with a 74-72—146.
WHAT THEY SAID:
“Obviously things went pretty well for us today,” said Longwood Head Coach Kevin Fillman. “It was by no means perfect, but we were definitely good enough in every facet to post a couple really solid scores in what were some pretty tough conditions at times. All five guys showed a lot of toughness, which is something I always ask from them.”
“I was also happy to watch us stick to our gameplan, especially on the holes where it is very important to do so,” Fillman added. “It’s nice to have a lead, but our job is not finished. We’re going to have to make good decisions and play aggressively again tomorrow in order to close it out.”
