HAM LAKE, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team, ranked No. 25 in the nation, certainly got off to a hot start to the season, as the team leads a talented field at the Augsburg Fall Invite after day one.
Teddy Kaste was the highlight, as the senior shot a three-under 69 to sit in first after round one. Jimmy Abdo, in his first collegiate competition, is sitting in sixth place with a two-over 74 to help the Gusties to their top position after day one.
Kaste totaled five birdies, including four in a row, while Abdo added a pair to contribute to the Gustie A Team.
Jack Reinardy sits in second for the Gusties, leading the Gustavus second team, with a round one 72 with four birdies on Saturday. The Gustie B Team is in fourth after the first round, with UW-Eau Claire and Saint John’s separating the two Gustavus teams.
“The first tournament of the fall season is always interesting because you prepare and sometimes you just don’t know how you respond,” said Assitant Coach Randy Stuckey. “I thought the guys came out with a good start and battled through some wind conditions. It’s always nice to get on top the first day, but they’re well aware that we will need to play a better round tomorrow. We saw a lot of good shots and some others that we need to clean up to better our scores. Teddy Kaste played incredible round today playing very relaxed and was clearly focused on scoring. He had it going and road it Out throughout the round.”
“The team got off to a great start today as we are in the lead heading into day two,” said Kaste, who leads the field. “I played really well today as I got off to a hot start birdieing my first three holes. My putter was really hot and I made a lot of long putts. Although we are happy with the start, day one is only the start and we must play as well if not better tomorrow to win the tournament.”
The Gusties tee off tomorrow morning with the hopes of the Augsburg Invite title in their future.
