BILOXI, Miss. – The Kansas men’s golf team sits in a tie for seventh place after the conclusion of the first round of the Fallen Oak Invitational in Biloxi, Mississippi on Saturday.
“It was a fairly sluggish start today,” said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. “This is a really difficult golf course and when you get yourself out of play, the key is to get it back into play. Unfortunately, we counted two triples and two doubles and it really hurt us. If we can clean those up, we will be just fine.”
The Jayhawks, who shot 298 (+10) as a team on Saturday, sit in a tie for seventh place and 11 strokes back of the tournament leader, Georgia.
Kansas was led by senior Gunnar Broin and junior Will King, as King finished with an even-par 72 and Broin right behind him with a one-over 73 for the opening round. King leads the Jayhawk pack and in a tie for 13th place, while Broin sits T22. King rode a stretch of three birdies in four holes to shoot a two-under 34 on the front nine.
Max Jelinek tallied three birdies in his opening round, along with 11 pars to card an opening round 76 (+4). Jelinek sits in a tie for 49th place after the first round.
Noah Holtzman played steady golf in his opening round, tallying 11 pars and two birdies as the sophomore recorded a five over round of 77, and sits in a tie for 55th place after the first round of play.
Luke Honner is T73 after an opening round of 80.
