RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s basketball team defeated the Champion Christian College (CCC) Tigers in a blowout 110-60 victory on Sunday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Fifth year senior K.T. Raimey led the Vaqueros (1-2) with a career-high 23 points and seven 3-pointers shooting 53% from the perimeter. Redshirt junior Howie Fleming Jr. was one assist shy of triple-double after scoring 10 points, grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists. Senior Cliff Davis scored 14 points, freshman RJ Nance finished with a career-high 12 points, sophomore Kwo Agwa also finished with 12 points, and junior Trey Miller had 11 points and three steals.
The Vaqueros hit 17 three-pointers, tying for second-most in program history.
KJ Younge led the Tigers (0-2) with 25 points and Adrian Brown added 11 points.
The Vaqueros and Tigers traded baskets until a 3-pointer by Davis sparked a 16-3 run that featured two Raimey 3-pointers and was capped off by a thunderous alley-oop when graduate student DK Thorn slammed home the lob from Miller to extend the Vaqueros lead to 28-14.
With 5:27 left the Vaqueros ended the half with a 16-2 run that saw Davis score five points and Fleming dish out three assists. The Vaqueros went into the half with a 48-21 lead.
With the Vaqueros leading 62-35 in the second half, UTRGV went on a 20-0 run that saw Raimey hit four 3-pointers in four and a half minutes.
With UTRGV leading 80-35, Nance scored his first career bucket on a driving layup before scoring the next eight points for UTRGV which included two 3-pointers.
With 8:05 remaining in the game, the Vaqueros and Tigers traded baskets where Agwa scored nine points, including his first UTRGV basket and Justin Mitchell scored his first career points on a driving layup.
The Vaqueros will be back in action when they hit the road again as they take on Charleston Southern in the Greenbriar Tip-Off on Friday at 12 p.m.
