All-Metro girls tennis first team

Kayla Chan, Ladue
Kayla Chan, junior, Ladue
Chan added a singles state championship to her impressive high school resume. Chan won the Class 2 singles crown this season, defeating Emmie Kinder of Ursuline in the final. Chan won a doubles state title with Meghan Ouyang as a freshman in 2022. Chan played No. 1 singles on a Rams’ team which lost to Barstow 5-4 in the Class 2 team championship match.

Adelyn Gross, St. Joseph’s
Adelyn Gross, freshman, St. Joseph’s
Gross was the missing piece on an already talented Angels team. Gross took over the No. 1 singles position after shining at the national level as a junior. The Post-Dispatch All-Metro player of the year helped St Joseph’s to its 19th state title, the most for any girls team in the state. Individually, she won the consolation singles title, losing just five games in her four wins.

Emmie Kinder, Ursuline
Emmie Kinder, junior, Ursuline
The question coming into the season was whether Kinder would continue her high school success with an increased level of play as the Bears moved up to Class 2 from Class 1. The answer was a resounding yes as Kinder finished in the top three in singles for the third year in a row. Kinder, who had finished second and third in Class 1, finished second in Class 2 this year, losing to Kayla Chan of Ladue in the state final.

Dia Kannan, Edwardsville
Dia Kannan, freshman, Edwardsville
Kannan was not only the top newcomer in the Metro East, but also the top player. Kannan did not lose a match to a player from the Metro East and was named the Southwestern Conference player of the year. She was a sectional singles champion and won three matches in singles at the Class 2A Illinois state tournament.

Allie Wayne, John Burroughs
Allie Wayne, junior, John Burroughs
Wayne was the No. 1 singles player on a very good Bombers team. She won the Metro League championship at No. 1 singles without losing a game. Wayne earned a third state medal in the individual state tournament as she and Isabella Hawkins finished third in Class 3 doubles. They won the district tournament, beating eventual state runners-up Ali Kennedy and Ashley Behan in the final.

Mia Yin, Lafayette
Mia Yin, junior, Lafayette
Mia had some big shoes to fill as she took over the No. 1 spot from her sister, Amber, who was last year’s Post-Dispatch All-Metro player of the year after an undefeated season. She led the Lancers to a Class 3 team runner-up finish, the best in program history. She was undefeated in singles in the regular season and finished third at state. Her only loss of the season came in the state semifinals.
All-Metro girls tennis second team
Ashley Behan, senior, St Joseph’s
Behan and Ali Kennedy finished second in Class 3 doubles after winning title last year. Helped the Angels win the Class 3 team championship.
Sophie Byron, senior, Edwardsville
Byron and Katie Woods were a dominant doubles team, so much so that they did not lose even a set against anyone from the Metro East.
Mikeya David, sophomore, Parkway West
David was the No. 1 singles player on the Longhorns and teamed with Shree Sikkal Kumar for a second-place state finishin Class 2 doubles.
Ashley Hayes, freshman, Francis Howell Central
Lost just one of 22 matches going into the state tournament en route to a fourth-place finish in Class 3 singles.
Ali Kennedy, senior, St. Joseph’s
Kennedy and Ashley Behan finished second in Class 3 doubles after winning title last year. She was a member of the Class 3 state champions.
Katie Woods, junior, Edwardsville
Woods, the Southwestern Conference Player of the Year in 2023, teamed with Sophie Byron to form a dominant doubles team.
All-Metro girls tennis third team
Bennett Baur, senior, MICDS
Baur played No. 1 singles for the Rams, who finished third in Class 2. Baur and Ellie Faerber also finished third in doubles in Class 2.
Julia Cramer, junior, Clayton
Cramer played No. 1 singles on the Class 1 team champion Greyhounds. She finished third in singles in the individual state tournament.
Andie Green, senior, Triad
Green was the dominant player in the Mississippi Valley Conference, winning the singles title, and was also a sectional champion.
Emily Heller, senior, Parkway Central
Heller closed out her high school career with a medal after finishing fourth in Class 2 singles. Heller was also a district champion.
Angela Hong, junior, Cor Jesu
The Chargers No. 1 player was a district champion in singles and earned a state medal with a sixth-place finish in Class 3.
Shree Sikkal Kumar, freshman, Parkway West
The fourth freshman named to the All-Metro team, Sikkal Kumar teamed with Mikeya David for a second-place finish in Class 2 doubles.
St. Joseph’s freshman Adelyn Gross is the Post-Dispatch All-Metro girls tennis player of the year.
