RICHMOND, Ind. – IU Indianapolis redshirt junior Sam McWilliams collected a runner-up finish at Friday’s The Indy at Forest Hills, carding a 36-hole 136 (67-69) for the day.
Xavier’s Zach Burton earned medalist honors at 132 (69-63), but was followed closely by a cast of Jaguars, led by McWilliams. McWilliams led after an opening round 67, but was unable to stave off Burton’s hot second round.
“I played good today,” McWilliams said. “My driver and wedges were the best they’ve been so far this season and I hit a lot of shots close early on. I couldn’t quite get the putts to drop down the stretch, but definitely still happy with how today went.”
McWilliams’ opening round saw him make six birdies and he followed with three more in the second round.
Freshman Daymian Rij skyrocketed to a third-place finish at 138 (74-64), buoyed by his 6-under 64 in round two. He made six birdies and an eagle in his second round against two bogeys. Colten Girgis and Noah Kirsch both earned top-10 finished among the 51-player field with Girgis carding an even par 140 (68-72). Kirsch had nine birdies for the day while Girgis made eight.
Kirsch was just off the pace at 141 (71-70). Sophomore Titus Boswell shot 143 (73-70) for the day and Brady Schier closed at 146 (73-73).
The Jaguars will continue the fall slate on Oct. 14-15 when they compete in Kennesaw State’s Pinetree Intercollegiate.
