Montgomery Bell Academy football coach Marty Euverard resigned Thursday after 14 seasons.
Euverard led MBA to a TSSAA state championship in Division II-AA in 2014 and six state runner-up finishes. He went 121-52 overall.
“I think it was just time,” Euverard said. “I love this place. I love my time here. There is incredible here, the support was tremendous. We had some great teams.
“But more than that, we had some kids that have touched my life and made me a better man. I’m just truly grateful for all those guys that came through here and touched my life in a powerful way. I had some great coaches, golly, that’s one of the tough things too — leaving that family of coaches.”
The Big Red were eliminated from the 2024 TSSAA football playoffs by Ensworth, 28-0, this season to finish 4-8. MBA went 5-7 in 2023.
MBA headmaster William Daughtrey announced Euverard’s resignation in a letter to the MBA community.
“In addition to his remarkable on-field accomplishments, Coach Euverard has shaped a team culture that emphasizes integrity, perseverance, and character development,” Daughtrey wrote in a statement to The Tennessean. “His impact on the lives of MBA students and the broader community has been profound.”
Daughtrey wrote that the school will begin a search for a new coach “to continue the program’s tradition of excellence.”
Euverard said he doesn’t have definitive plans on what is next. He didn’t rule out continuing to teach or coach. He will also continue to support the Big Red.
“I love MBA and I want to support and serve this school,” Euverard said. “It’s been great to me.”
However, Euverard does know at some point he will head to the farm. Euverard said he and his wife have purchased Euverard’s childhood farm in Rogersville.
“It’s a small farm,” Euverard said. “We want to go there and live. But I don’t know (what I’ll do next). I want to clear my head and ask the good Lord what direction and what door he wants to open.”
Euverard was inducted into the Tennessee Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2023. He has a 189-113 record in 26 seasons. He owns two state titles, winning the Class 5A 1998 state title at Oakland.
His other stops include Jefferson County, Clarksville and Battle Ground Academy.
MBA hired Euverard in 2011 after he went 7-6 at BGA. Euverard’s tenure with the Big Red includes three consecutive state championship game appearances from 2015-17 and three in four seasons from 2019-22.
The 2022 team went 12-1 under the direction of quarterback Marcel Reed, now at Texas A&M, losing 28-27 to McCallie in the DII-AAA state final.
