The Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline is approaching, as championship-contending teams across the league are looking for ways to improve their rosters.
The Dallas Mavericks are just outside the top 10 in defensive rating, but there are players available who could make them an even better defensive unit.
FanSided suggests that the Mavs trade for Bruce Brown of the Toronto Raptors. Dallas could use a little help with defending shots from a distance of 15 feet or greater.
Brown holds his opponents to 35.3% shooting within those parameters, evident by his ability to smother opponents with his size and length and force them into difficult shots.
The Mavs could also use help getting more offense from their pick-and-roll game, as the 2023 NBA champion proved to be an excellent pick-and-roll man during his lone season with the Denver Nuggets.
He generated 1.82 points per possession (99.6th percentile) in those situations while serving as a short screener for Nikola Jokic and taking advantage of the open space when multiple defenders chose to go over the screen to try and get the ball out of Jokic’s hands.
The Miami product would go to his patented floater, which was an automatic bucket.
Brown also found similar success next to Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden during his time with the Brooklyn Nets. He had the awareness to swing the ball to the corner if defenders collapsed on him, oftentimes getting the ball to Irving.
The 28-year-old’s cutting ability would make him a favorite target of Luka Doncic and cause opposing defenses to scramble all over the place just to try to erase shot opportunities inside and outside of the arc.
Brown was vital to the Nuggets’ success in the 2023 NBA Finals, playing at least 20 minutes in each game and scoring 21 points in Game 4. He has also played in at least 60+ games in most of his seasons in the league, which could give the Mavs a solid option to replace Doncic and Irving whenever either is out of the lineup.
