The Dallas Mavericks got some terrible news learning that Luka Doncic is out for an extended period.
Their championship window is now, and they’ve been linked to a bunch of big names, including a Miami Heat All-Star and Los Angeles Lakers All-Star.
But suppose neither of those stars becomes available. The Mavs could look to add a sharpshooting big man because they so desperately need to help space the floor next to Doncic and Kyrie Irving.
Nikola Vucevic of the Chicago Bulls could help provide exactly the floor spacing Dallas could use to open up the floor for Doncic and Irving, and he’ll also attract a ton of attention inside given his ability to dominate in the post.
The Mavs could send out a package including Daniel Gafford, Olivier-Maxence Prosper, and their 2025 first-round draft pick.
Chicago would gain a first-round pick in a loaded draft class, and a first-rounder alone could be enough to entice them to part ways with Vucevic.
Losing Gafford could sting given his strong chemistry with Doncic and ability to protect the rim, but Dereck Lively II is pretty much ready to take the leap as the defensive anchor inside the paint.
Vucevic also doesn’t need a playmaker like Doncic to help set him up for looks, which would ease the burden on the Slovenian superstar. His scoring will also help the Mavs weather the storm with Doncic out of the lineup for an indefinite period.
Adding the two-time All-Star to the lineup ensures Lively doesn’t have to rush into a full-time starting role, and it gives coach Jason Kidd more flexibility in what lineups to throw out there given the differing skillsets of the two big men.
