Matthew McConaughey sends message to Jessica Pegula after she reaches the final of the ATX Open

Jessica Pegula has hit some form at the ATX Open which is currently taking place in the United States.

The American player has seen off a number of players already and will face fellow USA-based player MacCartney Kessler in tonight’s final.

Pegula has produced some solid stats during her run to the final. She’s knocked out Arantxa Rus, Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, Anna Blinkova and Ajla Tomljanovic to reach the final.

At 31-years-old, Pegula is still searching for that maiden Grand Slam title. She reached the final of the US Open in August 2024 but came up against an in-form Aryna Sabalenka who was too strong on that occasion.

Pegula reached round three of the Australian Open as the number seven seed back in January. There, she was unexpectedly dumped out by unseeded Serbian player Olga Danilovic and her year is yet to really catch fire just yet.

The 55-year-old Texas native has been watching on at the ATX Open and it appears he’s a big fan of Pegula’s, messaging her on X after her victory in the semi-final.

The star of How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and The Lincoln Lawyer is clearly into his tennis and he’s looking forward to watching the American player in action again tonight.

He posted on X: “I hear you @JPegula, see you in finals tomorrow at ATX.”

Pegula came through in three sets against the Australian player Tomljanovic, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to reach her maiden final of 2025 and showcase a little bit of form.

The experienced player also sent a post back to McConaughey, saying: “Thanks for coming out to support.”

Pegula can kick-start Grand Slam tilt by winning ATX Open

Having been crowned a Grand Slam champion for the first time just ahead of her 30th birthday, Keys has given hope to the experienced players on the WTA Tour – including Pegula.

The American currently occupies fourth spot in the rankings and has been as high as number three in the world during her professional career, which started in 2009.

Pegula knows she can reach the business end of major tournaments after the US Open last year, but she’s never gone beyond the quarter-final of any other Grand Slam event.

All hope is not lost, however, and winning this evening could provide Pegula with the catalyst in terms of confidence that she needs to claim one of the sport’s biggest prizes.
