Rory McIlroy marked his first start on the 2025 PGA Tour in style, winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am by two shots from Shane Lowry.
Some had claimed the tournament was the real start of this year’s PGA Tour season, despite it being the fifth tournament and the second Signature Event on the calendar.
The reason for that view was that the event, which took place at Pebble Beach Golf Club and also Spyglass Hill Golf Course, was not only at one of the circuit’s most iconic venues, but also because McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, two of the world’s biggest golfing stars, were making their 2025 debuts on the PGA Tour.
McIlroy was in contention from day one, when both he and fellow Irishman Lowry recorded holes-in-one. The world no. 3’s 65 on Saturday put him right in the mix for the final round, in which he raced away from the field on the back nine.
An eagle at the par-five 14th gave McIlroy a cushion going into the final four holes and he comfortably closed out the victory. Lucas Glover, Justin Rose, Russell Henley and Cam Davis rounded out the top five and ties, with Scheffler finishing tied for eighth, six shots adrift, upon his return from minor hand surgery.
The AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am’s status as a Signature Event means there was a huge prize on offer, with a $20 million overall purse.
McIlroy scooped a cool $3.6 million as the winner. Not a bad way to start to the season.
The next event on the PGA Tour is the WM Phoenix Open, which runs from Thursday, February 6 to Sunday, February 9.
The tour then returns to California for a third Signature Event of the season, the Genesis Invitational (February 13 to February 16).
