NORTON, Massachusetts (January 10, 2025) – As part of its 125-year celebration, Mass Golf today has officially unveiled an exciting schedule for its 2025 championship events, which includes its three signature statewide championships and a brand new event.
These events highlight the exceptional talent of amateur golfers of all ages and regions across the Commonwealth, hosted at some of the state’s most storied and iconic venues. Each event has its own eligibility requirements to ensure fair competition. Following a staggering number of entries in 2024 — spurred by the introduction of automatic exemptions into USGA Championships — this year’s fields are expected to be just as competitive.
With consistently increasing interest in four-ball and team events, Mass Golf has introduced the Net Four-Ball Championship, which will take place September 16 at Waverly Oaks Golf Club in Plymouth. The new event is open to two-person teams of male amateur golfers who have an active Mass Golf Membership. Handicap Index® (per player) between [8.1 and 18.0] (at the time of registration). Registration will be based on a lottery system that opens Tuesday, May 6, and closes Wednesday, August 6.
Among the marquee events, the 117th Massachusetts Amateur Championship will, for the first time, be held at the luxurious GreatHorse in Hampden from July 7-11. Later in the summer, the 122nd Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship, the longest-running competition in Mass Golf history, returns to the historic Concord Country Club from August 11-15. Concord is a founding member of the former Women’s Golf Association of Boston.
Meanwhile, the dates of the 115th Massachusetts Open Championship have been shifted to June 10-12. With that, also comes a venue shift to Sacconnesset Golf Club in East Falmouth. Sacconnesset, which opened in June 2007, previously served as host of the 2017 Massachusetts Open, won by three-time champion Jason Thresher.
“Relocating this year’s Massachusetts Open was not a decision we took lightly,” said Kevin Eldridge, Mass Golf Senior Director of Rules & Competitions. “After careful consideration, we determined that Sacconnesset Golf Club would provide the best environment for players, officials, and spectators, ensuring this historic championship continues to meet the highest standards. We are grateful to Indian Pond Country Club for their understanding and look forward to partnering with them for future events.”
Another championship update in store is for the Amateur Public Links Championship, set for July 29-30 at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston. The annual championship, which showcases golfers with a Mass Golf Membership at a public golf course, is now open to individuals with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 8.0 (at the time of registration), a change from 12.0 the year prior. With the introduction of the Net Four-Ball, those with Handicaps exceeding 8.0 will still be eligible for a championship event during the 2025 season.
Like Concord, one of the state’s most historic courses was also selected to coincide with Mass Golf’s 125-year anniversary. Oakley Country Club in Watertown is another founding member of the WGAB and hosted the first Massachusetts Women’s Amateur Championship in October 1900, won by Grace Keyes. This summer, it will host the Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship for the Keyes Cup from August 25-26.
Another classic venue, Worcester Country Club, was founded in 1900 and has hosted the 1925 U.S. Open, the inaugural Ryder Cup in 1927, and the 1960 U.S. Women’s Open as part of its storied legacy. The esteemed club will host the Senior Amateur Championship from September 29-30.
The first wave of online registrations for the 2025 Mass Golf championships will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 27. Those will include the team events — Four-Ball, Mixed Four-Ball for the Stone Cup, Senior Four-Ball, and Women’s Four-Ball for the Townshend Cup. The remaining event entries will be staggered throughout the year. For a complete walkthrough of the registration process, CLICK HERE.
Some championship dates and sites are still to be announced. Check back to MassGolf.org for the latest schedule updates.
The Mass Open will be contested on a course considered a “modern classic,” as the Rees Jones-designed layout is recognized as the last new course to be built on raw land on Cape Cod. Just like in 2017, the course can be set up to play at just over 7,000 yards and has ample landing areas and a risk-and-reward approach to its greens.
The championship itself is the only Mass Golf event that includes a field of professional and amateur competitors and features one of the largest professional purses – $75,000 – in New England.
Last year, Virginia touring pro Brandon Berry flirted with disaster after a double-bogey on the 17th. Still, he made eagle on the signature par-5 18th at Willowbend, staving off Brookline native James Imai, who nearly became the first amateur winner since Kevin Quinn (1999).
In addition to its opulent facilities, GreatHorse provides an intriguing venue for this year’s Massachusetts Amateur Championship, given the event’s last two champions — Ryan Downes (2023) & Matthew Naumec (2024) — have held membership there. The two even went head-to-head in the 2023 final, with Downes making the final in 2022 as well. Of course, there will be a bevy of talented golfers trying to earn the coveted Massachusetts Cup and an automatic spot in the 2025 U.S. Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
The course, designed by New England-based architect Brian Silva, provides a par-72, 7,600-yard layout from the championship tees with a staggering 207 bunkers and over 200 feet of elevation change. The club has been previously selected as the 2019 New England Golf Course Owner’s Association Course of the Year and listed as one of GolfWeek’s Top 200 Modern Courses.
While this is its first Mass Amateur, the club has hosted an extensive list of championships and qualifiers. This includes the 2016 Massachusetts Women’s Amateur, 2018 Mass Open, 2020 Mass Mid-Amateur Championship, 2022 Ouimet Memorial Tournament, 2023 Mass Junior Amateur, and the 2024 New England Junior Amateur.
Concord Country Club, situated in one of the epicenters of this country’s early history, was founded in 1895. Donald Ross was commissioned to design the original nine holes in 1913 (today’s 1, 8, 9, and 13-18), then called upon again in 1928 to build another nine holes on newly acquired land. Nearly a century after opening its complete 18-hole layout, Concord remains a stern championship test with Ross features, which, according to the club’s centennial history book, includes “small, raised, contoured greens…with crowns and slopes that punish the imperfect chip…and carefully placed spacious bunkers.”
Concord has hosted the Mass Women’s Amateur five times total, most recently in 2014, with Isabel Stoddard earning the title. The club also hosted the Mass Amateur in 2022, capped off with an emotionally stirring victory by Conner Willett.
University of Georgia standout Morgan Smith has won the title two of the past three years but will likely have a strong field to contend with, including and especially younger sister Molly Smith (University of Central Florida), as the two faced off in a 20-hole bout in the 2024 semifinals at Taconic Golf Club. The winner will earn an automatic spot in the 2026 U.S. Women’s Amateur at The Honors Course in Tennessee.
