Today is a special day for one of the greatest players in the tennis world, Martina Navratilova. The Czech-American former professional tennis player celebrates her 68th birthday today, amid all the fanfare. Fans all over the world took to social media to share their messages on Navratilova’s birthday. Additionally, fellow players like Chris Evert also wished the tennis legend on her special day. However, there was one wish that caught the eye of Navratilova.
A fan named Javaun Moradi took to X to wish Navratilova on her 68th birthday and in the wish, the fan brought back the memories from Martina Navratilova’s playing days. Interestingly, Moradi was a ball kid when Navratilova played against Chris Evert. The fan even shared a throwback picture that showed a glimpse of that match.
Posting a sweet birthday message for the tennis legend, Moradi wrote, “Happy birthday! Chris and Martina, when I was 13 or so I was a ballboy for both of you at the Virginia Slims, Chicago in the late 80s, including the final you played against each other. I will never forget how kind you both were to all of us. That’s me at net.” The message instantly caught the eyes of Navratilova, who replied, “How cute! Amazing- thanks:)”

The match Moradi was referring to was the 1980 final in Chicago between Navratilova and Chris Evert. The latter won that match comfortably in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Despite the one-sided nature of that encounter, it left a lasting impact on the then-13-year-old Moradi. Evert and Navratilova shared one of the sport’s biggest rivalries, but despite their intriguing battles, the two still remain the best of friends.

Navratilova and Evert set an example for rivals in the sporting world by showing that rivalry and friendship can go side by side. Although they gave it all on the court, the duo never lost respect for one another which goes a long way in making their bond special. During Ralph Lauren’s event last month, Evert revealed how special their bonding was.
She said, “I know that you’re only a phone call away. We have such a rich history of again competing and especially towards the end of our career we we became very very close because we realized that we weren’t only competitors, that we were people with feelings as well and emotions. You’re one of my best friends and I know that I can always count on you.”
Additionally, Evert was among the first ones wishing Navratilova on her birthday. She took to X and wrote, “Happy birthday to my great friend (and rival!) @Martina who always has my back and continues to inspire me with her strength and resilience. Love our friendship.”
