The Wisconsin State Open is, well, open for the taking as the second round concluded on Tuesday at Minocqua Country Club in Minocqua with three players tied for the lead and nine more within three shots heading into Wednesday’s final 36 holes.
Two players had a chance to stamp the top of the leaderboard, but both fell victim to the closing holes.
First was Illinois professional Zach Place, who lists his home club as Sand Valley Golf Resort in Nekoosa. Place had surged to the top of the leaderboard at 11-under but finished his final three holes at 3-over. He is tied for fourth with two other players.
Place’s stumble allowed Marquette University’s Max Lyons to take pole position at 10-under, but he bogeyed the 17th to back up into a three-way tie for the lead with Hartford pro Sam Weatherhead and Nekoosa amateur Adam Miller at 9-under for the tournament.
Weatherhead made eight birdies on Tuesday to shoot up the leaderboard while Miller carded a clean round that saw him make five birdies and 13 pars.
Place and Miller teamed up in June to win the WSGA Four-Ball Championship. It was Place’s final event as an amateur.
The 156-person field was cut to the low 60 scores and ties following Tuesday’s round, and the final 36 holes of the championship will be played Wednesday. Last year’s top-finishing professional won about $12,500.
Defending champion Cameron Huss, who won last year as an amateur and turned pro for this event, is still connected to the top of the leaderboard after shooting a 3-under 69 to sit tied for fourth at 8-under for the tournament.
Along with Place, Huss shares that position with Appleton professional Zach Burry.
Spring Valley pro Tyler Leach and Hartland teenager Cody Guetzke (who plays out of IMG Academy in Florida) are 7-under for the tournament. They are joined by first-round leader Ross Thomson, a men’s golf assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin, who shot a 1-over 73 on Tuesday.
The top 10 is rounded out by amateurs Drake Wilcox of Sheboygan and Ricky Kuiper of Racine and Downers Grove, Illinois professional Aidan Lafferty at 6-under for the tournament.
