Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has withdrawn from the Australian Open. The withdrawal comes after sustaining an injury at the Adelaide International.
Vondrousova recently returned to competitive tennis after a six-month break. This followed shoulder surgery which caused her ranking to drop to 38 in the WTA rankings.

“Heartbroken to withdraw from the Australian Open due to an injury I sustained in Adelaide. I was looking forward to the tournament but health comes first,” the former world number six said on Instagram.
The Czech player was scheduled to face Jana Fett of Croatia in the opening round. A lucky loser will now take Vondrousova’s spot in the draw.
While the specific nature of her new injury remains undisclosed, Vondrousova exited the court in Adelaide during a match against Diana Shnaider. The reason appeared to be a back problem. Before her surgery, Vondrousova had achieved a career-high ranking of world number six.
