PORTSMOUTH — A bloody assault outside the Market Basket on Lafayette Road last week, following what is believed to be a dispute over a shopping carriage, remains under investigation by city police.
The incident occurred the morning of Thursday, Feb. 27, in the parking lot of the 1500 Lafayette Road grocery store, according to Deputy Chief Michael Maloney.
Portsmouth police and fire crews were called. They found an older man bleeding from the head and believed he was the victim of an alleged assault by another man, Maloney said.
The man found bleeding sustained a laceration to his forehead and a swollen eye and was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Maloney.
Conflicting stories have been reported to the police regarding the exchange.
“There was some sort of dispute over a shopping carriage. The older male party was assaulted by the other male party. There are some discrepancies as to who did what and why,” Maloney said.
Police expect charges will be filed.
“The (investigating) officer is still waiting on some witness statements. There is video surveillance of part of this case, too,” Maloney said Monday afternoon. “Nobody has been charged yet, though I would anticipate that charges would be forthcoming.”
The other man was not injured, nor was the woman with him.
Portsmouth police ask members of the public with information about the alleged assault to call officer Zachary Brandt at (603) 610-7465.
