OXFORD, Miss. — Kentucky football and Mark Stoops stunned college football Saturday.
UK, as a double-digit underdog, upset No. 5 Ole Miss in dramatic fashion at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, earning a 20-17 road victory.
Where does Saturday rank among Stoops’ top wins as Kentucky’s coach? What others are in the running?
We’ll count down from five.
Though this game no longer exists, per the NCAA, after Kentucky vacated all of its wins from the 2021 season because of violations, don’t tell that to UK fans. This victory in the 2022 Citrus Bowl capped only the fourth 10-win campaign in program history.
UK didn’t face its first deficit until the 10:54 mark of the final quarter. But star running back Chris Rodriguez scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:48 to go to seal the win.
Another Citrus Bowl. Another 10-win season. This three-point triumph gave UK its first double-digit-win campaign since 1977.
The Wildcats jumped to a 27-7 lead after three quarters. Then they held on in the final 15 minutes as the Nittany Lions staged a furious rally with 17 fourth-period points.
Louisville was in the middle of a dream season under first-year coach, and adored alum, Jeff Brohm. The Cardinals were 10-1, ranked in the top 10 and hoping for help around the country to possibly steal a College Football Playoff berth with a win over UK, coupled with a victory over unbeaten Florida State in the ACC championship game.
The dream was still alive in the waning moments of the third quarter, up 24-14 on Kentucky.
Then it all unraveled.
The Wildcats outscored the Cardinals 24-7 — all within the game’s final 17 minutes — to win the Governor’s Cup for the fifth straight time.
This 11-point win ended UK’s 31-game skid in the series against Florida. And while Florida entered the game ranked No. 25 in The Associated Press poll, this victory took on added esteem as time went on. That’s because the Gators finished the season ranked No. 8 nationally — still the highest-ranked squad in an end-of-season poll Stoops has beaten during his time in Lexington.
Ole Miss was expected to beat Kentucky. Handily. (Remember the betting line?) The Rebels entered 4-0 on the season, leading the FBS in scoring offense (55 points per game), scoring defense (5.5 ppg), total offense (670.8 yards per game) and passing offense (422.8 ypg).
None of those numbers mattered once the clock hit zero, as the Wildcats erased the Rebels’ zero in the loss column.
And gave Stoops the best win in a dozen years guiding the program.
