WASHINGTON (TNND) — Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., said Tuesday federal workers don’t deserve their jobs.
“Federal employees do not deserve their jobs. Federal employees do not deserve their paychecks, and these are jobs that can be fired at will,” she claimed during a hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Before she made her remark, the congresswoman was criticizing Democrats who have protested work done by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and Elon Musk, the unit’s head who has claimed to help eliminate waste and fraud in the government.
“You’re protecting the bureaucracy. The bureaucracy is not a business,” Rep. Greene said. “Those are not real jobs producing federal revenue.”
Earlier this month, Democratic members of the House and Senate spoke at a protest outside the headquarters of the United States Agency for International Development, which DOGE and President Donald Trump have expressed support for closing.
Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., in a reference to a buyout offered to federal workers by the Office of Personnel Management, said during the event that firing those employees does not save money.
“When we talk about civil service, being let go, what we are talking about is not saving money. It’s essentially saying they can get paid while they’re home, and their work doesn’t get done on behalf of the American people,” the congresswoman explained.
Rep. Greene claimed Tuesday federal jobs are “consuming” public funds.
“Those jobs are paid for by the American tax people, who work real jobs, earn real income, pay federal taxes and then pay these federal employees,” she said.
The American Federation of Government Employees, a union that says it represents 800,000 workers in the federal and Washington, D.C. governments, wrote in a press release last week the Trump administration has tried to gut the federal workforce and silence employees.
“Federal employees are not disposable, and we will not allow the government to treat them as such,” the union said.
