Marin Cilic posted a touching tribute to Juan Martin del Potro following his farewell tennis match.
The Argentine had not played since February 2022 after a nightmare run of injuries, including a fractured knee, which limited him to just one ATP Tour appearance since 2019.
Del Potro’s Argentina Open defeat to Federico Delbonis two years ago was his final professional match, but he wanted to compete in another match under better circumstances.
Therefore, he played an exhibition match on home soil against 24-time Grand slam winner Novak Djokovic on Sunday, and it was an emotional affair.
Juan Martin del Potro was one of the most beloved players on the ATP Tour during his career.
He always played with a smile on his face and produced an exciting and electric brand of tennis, which included his fearsome forehand.
Despite missing plenty of action due to his injury woes throughout his career, Del Potro still managed to win 22 titles, including the 2009 US Open.
He was subject to tributes following his 6-4, 7-5 exhibition victory over Djokovic, including from one of his former rivals, Marin Cilic.
“Dear Juan Martin, So many farewells this year, and while they are bittersweet for us tennis enthusiasts, they are also a celebration of all that you guys have achieved.,” the Croatian posted on X.
“I’m truly happy that you had the farewell you deserve, at home, alongside Novak Djokovic who showed his own greatness by honoring and celebrating this moment with you.
“It’s a testament to the admiration and respect you’ve earned from your peers and fans alike. Congratulations on all your incredible accomplishments, for realizing your dreams, and for inspiring so many with your journey.
“While we can’t help but wonder what could have been if luck (and health) had been kinder to you, your legacy is secure as one of the greats. Wishing you all the best in everything that follows—you truly deserve it.”
During their professional careers, Cilic and Del Potro played one another on 13 occasions.
Del Potro had the upper hand, winning 11 of those matches, including the last eight from 2012 to 2018.
Cilic’s first win came in a five set battle at the 2010 Australian Open, before picking up his second and final victory against Del Potro at the Canadian Masters in 2011.
The pair’s final meeting came in the quarter-finals of the French Open in 2018. Del Potro triumphed in four sets to reach the last four at the clay court Grand Slam for the second time.
His reward? A match against the defending champion Rafael Nadal, who claimed a comprehensive 6-4 6-1 6-2 win and went on to lift the title.
