Bayern Munich’s 0-0 draw against Bayer Leverkusen was anything but classy, and all of Bayern’s squad had to agree.

Manuel Neuer, however, saw the silver lining: “We’re happy with the result. Of course, it was tough, we didn’t create many chances, Leverkusen pressed hard. It was difficult to build up our play and combine. In the end we’re taking a point back home and keeping the 8-point gap. It was important not to lose, even though we’d wanted to win—but we didn’t deserve that today,” said Neuer (via @iMiaSanMia).

It was a rare sight—Bayern struggled to string together attacks, failing to register a single shot on target for just the second time since 2004-05. Instead of their usual dominance, they were forced into a defensive mindset, something Neuer acknowledged: “We trained a lot of box defending this week, and how to sit a bit deeper against a team that plays football well. We did that well.”

Ultimately, a point keeps their title race safe and sound, but performances like this won’t cut it in Europe. With Celtic up next in the Champions League, Bayern must rediscover their attacking edge—fast.
