MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – The Manhattan Disc Golf Club held a tournament on Saturday to benefit Be Able.
Be Able is a non-profit organization in Manhattan that “engages with those in adversity by creating connections, cultivating skills, and opening doors of opportunity.”
The Little Apple Circuit Series tournament had a $46 registration fee. The fee included 3 discs, lunch, games, and raffle.
A pair of K-State roommates, Mason Adkins and Jordan Clark, were in attendance for their first-ever disc golf tournament. After a summer of practice, the included discs were enough for Adkins.
“I saw the notification in one of the disc golf group chats I’m in, and they were like, ‘Hey, there’s a tournament going on,’” Adkins said. “They said there were free discs, except that you’d have to pay for the tournament, so I was pretty excited about that.”
Disc golf is growing in popularity across Northeast Kansas. Courses are continuing to pop up across the region, with the location of Saturday’s tournament, Fairmont Park, being a hot spot for disc golfers.
Clark spoke about the benefits of disc golf.
“You know, it’s pretty inexpensive. I mean, a low-end disc can cost like twelve bucks,” Clark said. “All these courses are free, usually, so you can just grab a disc with your friends, come down, have fun, and not have to worry about buying $500-$1000 worth of clubs.”
