The outdoor gym at Polliwog Park recently got a makeover.
Manhattan Beach held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week on its National Fitness Court after a project to revamp the workout area at the 18-acre park.
Construction on the new fitness court began in July and the rebuild was completed in September, city spokesperson Alexandria Latragna said. The city received a $30,000 grant from the San Francisco consulting firm National Fitness Campaign for the equipment, she added.
The new court is designed to provide a full body workout in seven minutes via a seven-station system that people of all ages and fitness levels can use. The circuit system focuses on core strengthening, squatting, pushing, lunging, pulling, agility and bending.
The National Fitness Campaign began in 1979 to build healthy communities across the country by promoting outdoor fitness and partnering with local municipalities to build fitness courts.
At the new outdoor gym, people can workout without weights or machines, using their own body weight to train on each piece of equipment. City officials, including Mayor Amy Howorth and Parks and Recreation Director Mark Leyman, tried out some of the new stuff at the Thursday event, guided by medical exercise specialists.
The old fitness station was installed in 2008 with 10 pieces of equipment, Latragna said, until it was upgraded this year.
