ALPHARETTA, Ga. (Oct. 18, 2024) – ETSU’s Yannick Malik and Ben Carberry led the ETSU men’s golf team in Friday’s opening round of the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate.
The Buccaneer duo both posted a 1-over 73 and are tied for 29th in the field of 75 golfers. Carberry totaled four birdies and 10 pars on his card, while Malik finished with five birdies and seven pars.
The field is chasing Charlotte’s Caden Baker as he shot a 6-under 66 on Friday and holds a one-stroke lead over three golfers.
Virginia took the team lead as the fourth-ranked Cavaliers shot a 9-under-par 279. The reigning tournament champion holds a one-shot lead over UCLA and a four-stroke advantage over No. 23 Duke.
The Bucs posted a first-round score of 9-over-par 297 and sit in 14th-place in a field of eight teams ranked in the top 25. In addition, eight teams played in the 2024 NCAA Championship, including ETSU.
ETSU’s other two countable scores came from Kristian Bressum (T50, +3) and Joshua Pritchett (T55, +4).
The Bucs tee off at 10:50 a.m. in Saturday’s second round. ETSU is grouped with Duke and UCLA.
