(WJAR) — One job just isn’t enough!
A new survey from MyPerfectResume finds 71% of U.S. workers now rely on at least two stream of revenue – whether it’s running a side business or working a second job.
MyPerfectResume Career Expert Jasmine Escalera said that’s because, as the cost of living continues to rise, many companies simply aren’t paying their employees enough.
“Over one-third of individuals said that they actually need secondary income in order to pay for basic necessities, which is wild,” said Escalera. “And almost half of them said they need this to pay for debt.”
She continued, “So, what this leads us to believe is that this is a necessity – this is not a luxury that we’re talking about – and we have an issue with salaries being about to meet the financial needs of Americans.”
Escalera said working two jobs creates problems for employers, as well.
Forty-nine percent of survey respondents said working a second job hurts their focus and performance at their primary job.
“What we’re looking at here is individuals who have to take secondary jobs to get secondary income, and unfortunately that’s having an impact on their main job or their main role,” explained Escalera. “Now, they also mentioned that there are more impacts that we have to be considerate of – some of those impacts include health concerns, burnout, not being able to spend time with family.”
And unfortunately, Escalera said right now the competition for high-paying jobs is fierce.
“We can see this on LinkedIn – you go to apply to a job, there are hundreds of applicants, the job market is incredibly competitive,” said Escalera. “So we’re at a really tough spot right now where I think companies have to start thinking about how do I retain my staff, and how do I make them more productive – not by making them do more work and pushing them harder.”
But until we start seeing significant increases in wages, Escalera said we’ll likely continue to see an increase in people picking up second jobs.
