Tomas Machac proved his love for all things Mexican tennis as he followed up his UTS Guadalajara victory with a first ATP Tour title in Acapulco on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Czech completed the perfect week with a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final.
Machac’s reward is a place in the world’s top 20 for the first time. He’ll be confirmed as the new world No 20 – up five spots – when the ATP rankings are officially updated on Monday.
In his acceptance speech, apologised to his coach, Daniel Vacek, for shouting at him during matches, but thanked him for his important words behind the scenes.
“I told him two weeks ago, I struggle sometimes with the big matches and I didn’t know how to manage these situations,” he told ATPTour.com. “Then I won UTS and now I won an (ATP) 500, so I will try to speak with him more often.”
Machac went into Acapulco as the highest-ranked man yet to win a title but rectified that statistic with a superb week, dropping just two sets in the process.
“It means a lot,” he said of his first ATP 500 title. “It is something I never dreamed could happen. Especially at an ATP 500, so it feels amazing for me. I was working very hard in the past year, so I am happy I can achieve something that shows me I am going the right way.”
