No. 5 LSU Softball earned its first upset win of the season on Thursday as it took down No. 4 UCLA.
Sierra Daniels and Tori Edwards each batted in a run to break a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning and the Tigers held off a late rally by the Bruins to win 2-1 in the first game of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, CA.
LSU remained unbeaten on the season at 15-0. It rode the strong pitching of Sydney Berzon, who earned her sixth win of the season. She went the distance in the circle, giving up five hits and striking out four.
Jalia Lassiter and Maci Bergeron each singled in the critical sixth frame. Edwards and Daniel plated both runners, giving the Tigers the lead for good.
The Bruins scored their sole run in the bottom half of the inning and led off the seventh with a double. With the tying run in scoring position and the tying run at the plate, Berzon induced two groundouts and a line out to put the game away.
A host of Tigers with varying experience levels contributed to the team’s win in crunch time. Lassiter and Bergeron, both juniors, found a way to get on base late in the game. Two second year players in Daniel and Edwards stayed disciplined at the plate to cash in on their teammates’ hits. Edwards’ go-ahead RBI single came with two outs.
Bergeron and Berzon stuck to their strategy when facing UCLA’s hitters every inning. They didn’t panic when UCLA threatened in the game’s final inning and trusted in their defense to make the necessary plays.
LSU plays tournament host Cal State Fullerton at 7 PM CT to conclude the first day of the Judi Gorman Classic.
On Friday, the Tigers will play Utah and Notre Dame. They will conclude their weekend slate on Saturday against Weber State.
