Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy’s interactive golf league arena almost ready
1,500-seat SoFi Center nearing completion for TGL interactive golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, January 7 opening in Palm Beach Gardens
LPGA golfers could one day be a part of TGL with teams comprised exclusively of female golfers or mixed foursomes.
TGL and the LPGA have spoken about a partnership that could lead to the women becoming a part of the interactive golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan mentioned last week before the start of the CME Group Tour Championship in Naples that the leagues have been talking.
Marcoux Samaan said the LPGA is “exploring some synergies with TGL.”
Discussions have included the league adding teams comprising four LPGA players or mixed teams with two men and two women.
“The LPGA should be in every conversation about golf,” Marcoux Samaan said. “So we’ve been talking to those guys for a long time, and I think we’ll try to figure something out how we can work together, whatever that looks like.”
TGL’s technology, which combines virtual golf with real chipping and putting, would “level the playing field,” according to a TGL spokesperson. It would allow the men and women to hit from the same tee box with the distance being adjusted virtually.
TGL is scheduled to debut Jan. 7 at the 1,500-seat SoFi Center on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens.
The league consists of six teams each comprised of four PGA Tour stars. Each team will play 15 matches during the regular-season, which runs through March 4. The four-team playoff starts March 17.
Mike McCarley, CEO and Founder of TMRW Sports, which owns TGL, would not comment on the possible addition of LPGA players, only saying: “We’re focused on TGL season beginning Jan. 7.”
