After being held to a season-low five points against No. 19 N.C. State, Louisville women’s basketball guard Jayda Curry has produced double-digit scoring performances in every game.
She scored a season-high 21 points in her second start of the season during the Cardinals’ 74-56 win over Miami on Jan. 2. The Californian followed it up with 11 points, seven of which came in overtime, to help U of L outlast Wake Forest, 81-76. Curry’s newfound confidence has been key in her averaging 11.4 points per game as the team’s second-leading scorer this season.
“Skill-wise, she’s as skilled as any guard that we’ve had here: ballhandling, shooting,” U of L coach Jeff Walz said. “But it’s between the ears, and I keep challenging her on the mental toughness.”
Curry will continue to develop that mental toughness and look to continue attacking on offense when U of L faces host Pitt today. Walz’s goal for Curry is to take 12-13 shots in each game. She did that against Boston College, in her first start of the season, and against the Hurricanes. Despite taking only seven shots against the Demon Deacons, she shot 42.9% from the field and made timely shots during overtime.
“What she did there in overtime is what we needed in regulation, throughout the game,” Walz said. “I keep telling her — and it’s the frustrating part for me is I keep telling her — attack the basket. Every time you have an open shot, shoot it. … So that’s where I’m trying to continue to challenge her.”
