Louisville basketball: Jeff Walz talks win over Cal at KFC Yum! Center
Louisville Cardinals women’s basketball coach Jeff Walz discusses the 70-63 victory over the California Golden Bears Thursday at the KFC Yum! Center.
For as hot of a streak as Louisville women’s basketball has been on, head coach Jeff Walz was fine with taking a week off.
It wasn’t Michael Jordan’s flu game — “maybe like a cold,” Walz said — but about six Cardinals were battling the flu in addition to Florida State last Thursday. They defeated the Seminoles, 83-69, and used the extra time to conquer the flu ahead of another ranked road matchup.
“They showed that toughness that we’ve been looking for because not one of them looked like, ‘Oh my God, they’re not feeling well.’ You can see it on their face at every dead ball, every timeout,” Walz said. “They kept finding more, so I was really proud of that. We need this break so if a few more get it, let’s get it now and be done with it.”
A healthy Louisville team is set to take on No. 11 Duke at 7 p.m. today. In another battle for positioning, the Cardinals (18-7, 11-3 ACC) and Blue Devils (20-6, 11-3) are in a three-way tie with No. 10 North Carolina for third place in the ACC standings. U of L is scheduled to play UNC on Sunday at the KFC Yum! Center.
Stay tuned for updates throughout the Cardinals’ ACC clash against the host Blue Devils.
The game between the Cardinals and Blue Devils will be on ESPN2 with Pam Ward and Stephanie White on the call. Qualified subscribers can stream the game on ESPN+.
Nick Curran (play-by-play) and Cortnee Walton (analyst) will have the call on the Cardinal Sports Network (WLCL 93.9-FM and WGTK 970-AM in Louisville).
