Mick McCabe’s 50 years at the Free Press: The best high school athletes he’s seen

For the third time in his career, former Detroit Free Press high school sports writer Mick McCabe was named the Michigan sports writer of the year by the National Sports Media Association.
On Tuesday, the organization announced its newest class of sportscasters and writers from across the country. Detroit Tigers play-by-play announcer Jason Benetti of FanDuel Sports Network Detroit was named the Michigan Sportscaster of the Year.
The NSMA also announced a four-person Hall of Fame class that features two Michiganders. NBC sportscaster and Ann Arbor resident Mike Tirico along with Detroit native Wendell Smith will be inducted into the 2025 National Sports Media Association Hall of Fame this summer in North Carolina, according to the release.
McCabe’s Free Press career began in the summer of 1970 and would go on to became the synonymous voice of Michigan high school athletics for 50 years. Despite putting the pen and pad down in 2016, he has continued to contribute to the paper as a freelancer.
In addition to his three Sports Writer of the Year awards, McCabe has accomplished other achievements. He was inducted the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 2010, the same year he won his first NSMA award. In 2018, he was part of Michigan Sports Hall of Fame class for that year and would have the Miss Michigan Basketball award named after him. McCabe won his second NSMA Hall of Fame award in 2020.
McCabe is one of 15 other sportswriters from the Free Press that have won the honor through the years. He will bring the newsroom its 36th award from the organization dating back to its origins in 1959.
