OZARK, Ala. (WTVY) – Longtime Carroll High School football coach Paul Terry died on Saturday.
He was 89, according to his obituary.
Coach Paul Terry was the longest-tenured head football coach at Carroll High School, leading the team from 1979 to 1991. Under his leadership, the 1989 Eagles team made it to the State Semifinals, farther than any other football team in the school’s history.
Coach Terry is one of the only two coaches in the school’s football history to win two Region Championships.
He was inducted into the AHSAA, Morgan County, and Wiregrass Sports Hall of Fame.
Terry played football at Auburn University and was offered to play in the NFL, but decided to coach high school football, his obituary said.
He worked as an assistant coach both Andalusia and Enterprise before becoming the head coach for the Wildcats in 1961. He also coached at Florala High School. Terry retired from Carroll High School with 34 years of high school coaching under his belt.
Carroll High School Athletics extended condolences to Coach Terry’s family in a Facebook post.
According the the obituary, the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 20 in the Chapel at Searcy Funeral Home in Enterprise. Visitation begins at 12 p.m. The graveside service is limited to immediate family members.
In lieu of flowers, guests can choose to donate to the COPD Foundation for the American Lung Association in Coach Terry’s honor.
