A Nassau County cop believed to be moonlighting for the Bonanno crime family allegedly staged a fake raid in an attempt to shut down a gambling parlor operated by rival Genovese mobster Salvatore “Sal the Shoemaker” Rubino, according to prosecutors and a report published by the Daily News.

A Bonanno associate-turned-informant is expected to testify that Det. Hector Rosario allegedly stormed Rubino’s Merrick, Long Island shoe repair shop sometime in 2013 or 2014 and busted one of the gambling machines before demanding Rubino reveal the whereabouts of Joseph “Joe Box” Rutigliano, a Genovese associate who collected the gambling proceeds, according to prosecutors, the report said.

Rosario, who was fired from the Nassau County Police Department in August 2022, will head to trial next month in Brooklyn Federal Court for obstructing a grand jury investigation and lying to the FBI. He was arrested alongside eight other men as part of a federal takedown of Genovese and Bonanno gambling operations who were charged with running gambling dens out of cafes and sports clubs in Queens and on Long Island, the report said.
