HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Early in the morning, Egan’s Fitness in Honolulu is filled with people dedicated to staying in shape and being healthy.
This holiday season, these fitness warriors have that same mantra to help those in need.
Marcia Inoue and her husband Egan Inoue are the owners of Egan’s Fitness in Honolulu and Aiea. Just before the holidays began, they reached out to gym members to see if anyone wanted to help out.
“We have such generous members and such a great community and we’re just so privileged that we would like to be able to help others in the community,” she said.
The response was overwhelming. The gym teamed up with Helping Hands Hawaii’s Adopt A Family campaign. Wish lists were provided to the gym, identifying requests from several ohana.
“I think there are a lot of people that are in need an unable to have these things for themselves, so we just want to help because we are fortunate enough to be comfortable and we want to share that with everybody else,” said gym member Ruthie Nishikawa.
Gym staff and members took to the malls to purchase the goods for the families while others made monetary donations to help out.
“I feel like it’s good to think of other people during this time of year. We’re so blessed that it’s good to be a blessing to those around us and those who maybe don’t have as much,” said gym member Cicely Aoki.
“I think with our members going above and beyond, it was definitely they’re doing to feel the need to give back,” said Jaden Murashima, a coach at Egan’s Fitness.
All told, members gathered enough cash and gifts to fill the wish list for four families proving that it better to give than to receive.
“I want to thank all the donors who are participating and partnered with Helping Hands Hawaii because of you, we are able to make a huge impact to over 500 families this holiday season,” said Dani Maldonado, Helping Hands Hawaii director of operations.
