LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – If you’re a golfer, you know the sinking feeling in your stomach when you take a swing and the ball slices. When you’re out on the golf course, it can be hard to diagnose what’s going on with your swing. That’s part of why PGA Professional Derek Jensen wanted to start Under Par Golf Studio near 84th and Holdrege.
“I wanted to make people in Lincoln better at golf and make Lincoln a bigger golf community than it already is,” Jensen said. “Anyone who does play golf knows it’s like impossible to get a tee time on the weekends and now anywhere. But I wanted people to know that you can get better at any age.”
Under Par Golf Studio offers a handful of bays with cameras that track each shot, a screen that projects the trajectory of the ball, and follows up with a page of statistics on the angle of your club face at impact, what quadrant of the club face you hit the ball on, etc. More than that, those cameras record each swing, so Jensen can walk through it all with you.
Obviously, I had to take some swings. It took a while to get in the groove, but eventually, I got there for at least one good shot.
“I’m a nerd when it comes to this stuff,” Jensen said while looking over my own stats. “I’ll self-admit that and everything that we do is the highest tech stuff. The golf industry has a lot of cool features that I don’t think anyone in the states really seen.”
After looking over the video, Jensen saw that I was lifting my right heel before impact, so he brought out a piece of foam so I can practice keeping my heel down.
A benefit of technology, I mentioned during our session, is that it demystifies golf. Jensen agreed.
“Being able to see it on video without the glare and on a nice big screen is really beneficial. And you can see it from both angles, so we can see everything that’s kind of happening all at the same time. Right, right after you hit the shot, basically,” he said.
Jensen is a self-proclaimed golf-nut. His parents gifted him golf clubs for Christmas when he was 12; the rest is history.
“I think it was kind of convenient daycare for them,” Jensen said. “I worked my way up from kart kid as a 15-year-old all the way up to head pro.”
Now he gets to pass that passion on to others. Under Par offers classes for adults and juniors as well as club fitting and repairs.
Under Par also has bays to rent and play, so whether you’re learning, or you just want to golf in the cold, you’re covered.
