Back down to Earth.
After a rip-roaring week that included an 18-point comeback win over California and a Border War-clinching, court-storming win over Kansas, Missouri basketball returns to the court for a matchup against Long Island on Saturday morning at Mizzou Arena.
The Tigers (8-1) are on an eight-game winning streak after knocking off then-No. 1 KU. With another win, Mizzou will tie its longest winning streak under third-year head coach Dennis Gates. Mizzou was the fourth team out of the AP Top 25 in Monday’s updated rankings and received votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
The Tigers are going to play without standout guard Caleb Grill, who will miss his third straight game with a neck injury, per MU head coach Dennis Gates.
Long Island (4-8) is the 332nd-ranked team among the 364 Division-I squads on the basketball analytics site KenPom’s rankings. The Sharks opened the season at Ole Miss, where they lost 90-60, and have since recorded wins at Air Force and Charlotte.
The Columbia Daily Tribune is live on site at Mizzou Arena for the the Tigers’ game against Long Island. You can follow along on this page for updates on every key play and major update live from the game:
This section will be updated when the game begins. Live updates from the game will be provided below the scoreboard.
10:37 a.m.: It looks like true freshman center Trent Burns is wearing a boot on his right foot, which is as good as confirmed that he will not make his MU debut today. Caleb Grill also is in attendance, still wearing a neck brace.
10:02 a.m.: Today is the first of two ‘buy games’ for the Tigers after beating Kansas and before taking on Illinois next Sunday. The last time we were here, as I’m sure you all well remember, Norm Stewart Court was flooded with fans after the first gold-and-black Border War win since 2012. Mizzou hasn’t shown many signs that this is a team that can be upset by a far-overmatched opponent, but the objective for the squad today, clearly, is to avoid any comedown from last Sunday’s heroic.
10 a.m.: Good morning from Mizzou Arena, where the Tigers will tip off against Long Island in about one hour from now. Availability news, as it stands, is that Caleb Grill will be the lone absentee today. Dennis Gates did say Friday that the team is being careful with 7-foot-5 center Trent Burns as he recovers from an injury, so we expect that today is not the day the freshman big man makes his debut.
Missouri’s game against Long Island is scheduled to tip off at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mizzou Arena. It will be the Tigers’ earliest tipoff time of the season until their regular-season finale at home against Kentucky.
The game will not air on a cable network, but if your cable subscription has SEC Network included you can access SEC Network+ for free.
Tickets for the game in Columbia are currently available on StubHub, with prices starting at $1.
Missouri’s game against Long Island will stream live on SEC Network+, which is accessible via ESPN+. KOMU’s Ben Arnet will be the play-by-play announcer for the game, and former Missouri women’s basketball guard Jordan Roundtree will be the on-air analyst.

Caleb Grill will not play for Missouri on Saturday against Long Island, Gates confirmed to the Tribune on Saturday. The Missouri coach said Grill is still day-to-day and that there is no current timeline for his return.
Missouri 94, Long Island 61
Beware the let down, sure, but Missouri has shown very few signs of weakness in its buy games to date this season.
The Sharks are likely to come out and play what Gates called some “hard-nosed” basketball, but this Mizzou team has shown more than enough to suggest it will breeze through this Saturday game.
