LIV Golf is coming to Michigan for the first time.
The Saudi-backed golf league, which launched in 2022 and quickly became a competitor to the PGA Tour, released its 2025 schedule on Tuesday.
LIV Golf’s 2025 schedule will close with its team championship at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort in Plymouth Township from Aug. 22-24. The Cardinal opened in 2024 – the first newly built championship course in metro Detroit in over two decades, according to its website. The course plays 7,002 yards from the back tees.
It didn’t take long for The Cardinal to land its first professional tournament. The team championship at Saint John’s is one of 14 LIV events in 2025 and will be one of four professional events in Michigan. It will take place two months after the seventh-annual PGA Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club. The LPGA Tour also is hosting tournaments in Grand Rapids and Midland this year.
Financed by the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, LIV launched as an alternative to the traditional PGA Tour. It has poached several of the world’s top stars such as Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson, Jon Rahm and Dustin Johnson and features 54-hole tournament formats instead of the traditional 72 on the PGA Tour.
