More big time professional golf is coming to metro Detroit this summer.
LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed golf league that has reared heads with the PGA since it’s inception, announced on Tuesday that its final event of the year, a team competition with millions of dollars at stake, will be played from Aug. 22-24 at the newly renovated The Cardinal at St. John’s resort in Plymouth Township.
The PGA’s Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club has become an annual summer staple in the area since Nate Lashley won the inaugural tournament in 2019, and now diehard golf fans can add another tournament to their watch list.
The LIV tournament was part of four additional events that were announced on Tuesday and the stop at The Cardinals will complete a Midwest swing to round out the season, with events in Chicago and Indianapolis proceeding the tourney in Plymouth Township.
While it may seem like an unusual landing spot, those who closely follow golf in southeast Michigan know that The Cardinal has been a hot topic for many years.
After years of anticipation, the course just opened up to play in June of 2024 and has gotten rave reviews from many of those who have gotten to play the new track.
Freep’s Carlos Monarrez called The Cardinal “well worth the price,” and an excellent golf experience, while Our Man Marlowe Alter had the best round of his life while playing the course this summer, shooting a 75 and net 62.
No offense to Mr. Alter, of course, but the golfers who will be appearing at the course this summer will have much more trophies in their cabinets.
While the PGA Tour is still considered the gold standard in professional golf (outside of the four major championships), LIV Golf has made it a priority to add some of the biggest names in the sport with a focus on past success.
Notably, Phil Mickelson was one of the tour’s first big signings, and though he’s well past his prime, he still draws quite a crowd almost anywhere he plays.
That’s not to say that LIV doesn’t have some of the current best players in the world, too. Jon Rahm (two-time major champion, former No. 1 player in the world), Bryson DeChambeau (two-time major champ, defending U.S. Open winner), Brooks Koepka (five-time major winner) and many others play on the cash-rich tour.
And here’s the good news for fans in Michigan: all of the biggest names on the tour will almost certainly be on hand for the event in August.
The PGA Tour has better depth and week-to-week competition, but because of how many events it has throughout the year, some tournaments fall a bit flat with unimpressive fields, like has happened at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at times over the years.
LIV meanwhile, only plays 14 events a year, including the one in Michigan, so golfers are expected to show up to every tournament, barring some outside circumstance.
In addition, LIV plays just three rounds per tournament, as opposed to the prototypical four rounds that is standard across professional golf. While looking to create a nice of its own, LIV has also encouraged a more party-like atmosphere at many of its events.
The team finale will especially be mandatory, so from Mickelson to DeChambeau, there will be plenty of big names on hand for the event this summer.
