CALN — “It’s a horrible situation for those puppies that just deserved to live. These are souls that deserved life,” said Sara Smith, senior director of marketing and communications for the Brandywine Valley SPCA.
A litter of seven pitbull/terrier mix puppies was found dead, approximately 130 yards off the Route 30 Bypass, at Ingleside Golf Club, Monday, by a course staffer.
Caln Police and the Brandywine Valley SPCA have launched an investigation into the death of the 6-8 week old puppies that Police Chief Joe Elias said is a “heartbreaking” situation.
One poster on the Caln Township Facebook page wrote, “How sad omg I would have took one this breaks my heart,” while another post reads, “God how cruel.”
Elias said there was no visible outward signs of abuse. He also said that police made a grid search of the golf course property.
The chief hopes that someone from a nearby home saw or heard something, but is more hopeful that someone from the community knows about the puppies.
“If your neighbor had a pregnant pit bull and you see the dog but not the puppies” then make a report, the chief said. “This is drawing a lot of attention—rightfully so.”
Smith said that the SPCA offers several resources to the community.
There is re-homing consultation, low cost or grant funded neutering and spaying, and a free pet food pantry.
“We are here for them…and to help folks who are themselves in a situation and need help,” Smith said.
Elias said that at a minimum, the former puppy owner would likely face Cruelty to Animal charges, but the district attorney would need to be consulted.
Ingleside Golf Club is donating $5 from all greens fees from July 25-28 to the Brandywine Valley SPCA to support prevention of animal abuse.
Anyone with information is asked to call Caln Township Police at 610-383-1821 or 610-383-7000.
The BVSPCA also has an anonymous tip line, at 484-302-0018.
